Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface weaves together shifting perspectives on the presence of water within the Australian landscape.
Where some artists look to natural waterways for inspiration, others create more symbolic commentary using water as a metaphor to reveal hidden histories and unseen power structures. Through painting, printmaking, photography and sculptural installation, water is examined as a channel for memory, culture and transformation.
The exhibition includes artworks on loan from the Jreissati Family Private Collection, alongside artworks from the HOTA Collection. HOTA wishes to thank the Jreissati family for their continued support.
Exhibiting artists
Mary Elizabeth Barron, Dorothy Mary Braund, Glennys Briggs, Rupert Bunny, Byron Coathup, Elisabeth Cummings, Jamie Holcombe, Honey Long and Prue Stent, Balang Nakurulk, Dorothy Napangardi, Judy Napangardi Watson, Paul Ogier, John Olsen, Lin Onus, Eugenia Raskopoulos, William Robinson, Mark Schaller, Tim Storrier, Brett Whiteley, Fred Williams

Meet an Author: Anna Johnston
Meet an Author: Anna Johnston
Meet Anna Johnston as she introduces her heartfelt new book When Lemons Give You Life, a warm, funny and life-affirming novel exploring food, family and rediscovering joy at any stage of life.
Retired Michelin-star chef Griff Barlow has lost his appetite. He’s done with grief, guilt and the beige slop they dare call food at Sunny Glen Aged Care Facility, where he now resides. Life’s given him all the lemons he can handle – so he breaks into the nursing home kitchen to bake himself one last tart.
Anna Johnston is the author of the international bestselling The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife, which was recently acquired by Netflix.
Drawing on her background working in aged care, Anna will discuss the inspiration behind the book and the timely themes woven through the story, including ageing and the importance of being seen – by others and ourselves.

Bangarra Dance Theatre – Horizon
Bangarra Dance Theatre – Horizon
From two of the world’s great First Nations comes a new work: Horizon.
Some call it a feeling, some call it the mother spirit. It’s the place where sea meets sky, the horizon we all look to, the compass that guides us home.
In Bangarra's first mainstage cross-cultural collaboration, leading Māori choreographer and Arts Laureate Moss Te Ururangi Patterson joins beloved Bangarra alumna Deborah Brown. Together they guide their award-winning ensemble in stories that honour their mother countries and the spirit that calls them home.
Brown is a proud descendent of the Wakaid Clan and Meriam people in the Torres Strait, and has heritage from far across the seas in Scotland. She carries strength and resilience from her ancestors. Patterson, born near Lake Taupō, is a proud mokopuna (grandson) of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe, and describes his sense of home as something alive, a fire inside, that he carries like a beating heart.
Come explore the cultural forces that bind us together, across oceans and eons.
Horizon is a double bill opening with Kulka by Bangarra alum Sani Townson, followed by the primary piece, The Light Inside, choreographed by Bangarra alum Deborah Brown and Māori choreographer and Arts Laureate Moss Te Ururangi Patterson.OTA Lake Precinct

Would you like to see some of the most highly acclaimed authors in the world?
At Somerset Storyfest you can immerse yourself in literature!
It all kicks off with the Prologue Party - fun for the whole family - and for the adults, come along to either the Literary Lunch on the Tuesday or alternatively, The Craig Bassingthwaighte Long Table, held as the closing event for the Festival on the Wednesday evening. Tickets will be available for purchase online four weeks before the commencement of Storyfest Gold Coast.
Many sessions have limited numbers, so book early to avoid disappointment.
